Do online sellers need GST registration?
Sending goods to other states usually needs registration whatever your turnover. Selling goods on marketplaces usually does too, with a limited exemption for small sellers who sell only within their own state. Marketplaces generally ask for a GSTIN when you sign up as a seller, or a GST enrolment number if you use the small-seller exemption.
For businesses that supply only goods, registration is required once your aggregate turnover crosses ₹40 lakh a year (lower in some states, e.g. ₹20 lakh or ₹10 lakh). That higher limit is not available for some items like ice cream, pan masala and tobacco. If you also provide services, the limit is an aggregate turnover of ₹20 lakh a year (₹10 lakh in special category states).
If you are not sure which rule applies to you, WhatsApp us what you sell, on which marketplaces and to which states, and we will explain your options.
TCS: check it every month
The TCS that marketplaces collect on your sales shows on the GST portal. Once you accept it, it’s credited to your electronic cash ledger and can be used to pay GST. Check it every month against your sales.
Marketplace settlement reports, returns and cancellations rarely match your invoices one-to-one. As part of reconciliation, we match your marketplace sales reports with your invoices before filing your GSTR-1, so the figures you report line up with what the marketplace reports.
What we do for sellers
- GST registration: ₹999 + GST, free with yearly Hive 50 or Hive 100. Some applicants in Maharashtra are asked by the GST portal to visit a GST Suvidha Kendra once for biometric Aadhaar verification and to show original documents. If that happens to you, we help you book the slot and tell you what to carry.
- Monthly filing: GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, from ₹999/month + GST for up to 50 invoices a month (sales and purchases together).
- Bookkeeping: ledgers and bank reconciliation, included in Hive 50 and Hive 100.
- Input tax credit: GSTR-2B reconciliation for your purchases, packaging and marketplace fees.
How it works
- WhatsApp us your GSTIN (or that you need one) and the marketplaces you sell on.
- Each month, send your marketplace sales reports and purchase bills.
- We reconcile, prepare and file your returns, then send you the acknowledgement.
Selling through Instagram or your own website as well? Send those sales too, and we include them in the same filing. Starting out? Read about GST registration.
